Our Approach to Grantmaking

The Sunflower Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Kansans through improved access to affordable and quality health care, promotion of healthy lifestyles and prevention efforts. We envision our role as a catalyst and, therefore, look to support programs that are innovative and have the potential to affect change at a systems level. But our interest is in more than just funding projects; we want the programs of our grantees to succeed and to have a positive impact on the health of Kansans.

We look at health in the broadest sense, thinking of health as an optimal state of well-being – physical, emotional and social. It is the ability of people and communities to reach their best potential – by improving access to health care, eliminating barriers to health and health care, creating healthy environments and by supporting personal responsibility for health.

Our Funding Process and Priorities

The Sunflower Foundation provides opportunities for funding through multiple strategies, including requests for proposals, foundation initiatives and special projects.

While it is tempting to want to address many health needs in our state – to be "all things to all people" – we have learned that we will be most effective with our limited resources if we focus our grantmaking.  After examining the state’s leading health issues, we have identified priority funding areas that fit our foundation’s origin, mission and interests.  Our current program activities focus on the following areas:

Health Care Access – Projects that focus on improving access to health care for growing numbers of uninsured and underinsured, with an emphasis on community based health services, and projects that address health disparities;

Capacity Building – Projects that strengthen the organizational capacity of community-based health and human services organizations, with a focus on organizations that provide primary health care and primary prevention services;

Healthy Behaviors and Prevention – Projects that emphasize the importance of physical activity and healthy nutrition as a means to preventing obesity, especially in children and youth, and projects that seek to prevent or control tobacco use among Kansans, with an emphasis on children and youth; and

Special Projects – Projects that offer unique opportunities for partnerships, collaborations and leveraging.
